Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in India: Causes, Symptoms & Sudden Surge
By Dr. HK’s Neuro and Parkinson’s Clinic, Bangalore
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare but serious autoimmune neurological disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and sometimes paralysis. In recent months, India has witnessed an unprecedented surge in GBS cases, prompting public health alerts and raising awareness about this condition.
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
GBS typically appears after an infection such as gastroenteritis, flu, or viral illnesses. The immune response triggered by these infections cross-reacts with nerve tissues, causing inflammation and nerve damage. The hallmark symptom is rapidly progressing muscle weakness starting from the legs and ascending upwards, potentially affecting breathing muscles in severe cases
Causes and Risk Factors
Most GBS cases follow infections, with Campylobacter jejuni—a bacterium causing food poisoning—being the most common trigger. Viral infections like cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and norovirus have also been linked. Environmental factors such as contaminated water supplies were implicated in recent outbreaks in Pune and Maharashtra
Sudden Surge in India
In early 2025, Pune city and surrounding areas in Maharashtra became the epicenter of a GBS outbreak. By mid-March, over 230 cases and 12 fatalities were reported. The outbreak spread to multiple states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal. Public health investigations pointed to contaminated water sources and infections as main contributors. The outbreak was contained through coordinated healthcare responses and water safety measures.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Rapid onset of muscle weakness starting in legs and ascending upwards
- Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in limbs
- Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or moving arms
- Facial muscle weakness affecting speech, chewing, or swallowing
- Severe cases may result in respiratory failure requiring hospital care.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis involves clinical assessment supported by nerve conduction studies and lumbar puncture analysis. Treatment focuses on reducing immune attack and supporting nerve recovery through:
- Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis): Removes harmful antibodies from the blood
- Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG): Supplies protective antibodies to suppress immune damage
Supportive care including physical therapy and respiratory assistance may be necessary.
Prevention and Public Health
Improved sanitation, safe drinking water, and timely management of infections reduce GBS incidence. Awareness, rapid diagnosis, and accessible treatment facilities are critical to reducing morbidity and mortality from GBS outbreaks.
