NCS, EMG & VEP Testing

Advanced Neurophysiology Services for Accurate Nerve, Muscle & Visual Pathway Diagnosis

At Dr. HK’s Neuro and Parkinson’s Clinic, we offer a complete range of advanced neurophysiological diagnostic tests—including Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Electromyography (EMG), and Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP). These tests play a crucial role in evaluating nerve health, muscle activity, and visual pathway function, supporting precise diagnosis and effective treatment planning.

These non-invasive or minimally invasive tests help identify disorders affecting the peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction, muscles, and optic pathways, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation for neurological symptoms.

1. Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)
Assessing Nerve Speed, Strength & Function

An NCS measures how fast and how well electrical signals travel through peripheral nerves. Small surface electrodes placed on the skin deliver mild electrical impulses, and the responses are recorded to assess nerve function.

Uses of NCS

NCS is commonly used to diagnose:

  • Peripheral neuropathy (diabetic, toxic, nutritional)

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome & nerve entrapment disorders

  • Cervical and lumbar radiculopathy due to slipped discs

  • Nerve injuries following trauma

  • Motor neuron disorders

  • Sciatica and nerve root compression

Why NCS Is Important
  • Quick, safe, and highly informative

  • Provides objective measurements of nerve conduction speed

  • Helps distinguish between nerve damage and muscle-related issues

  • Often paired with EMG for a complete neuromuscular assessment

2. Electromyography (EMG)
Evaluating Muscle Activity & Neuromuscular Health

EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles during rest and movement. A very fine recording needle is inserted into selected muscles to detect abnormalities in muscle activation.

What EMG Helps Diagnose
  • Myopathies (muscle diseases)

  • Neuropathy-related muscle weakness

  • Motor neuron diseases (e.g., ALS)

  • Radiculopathy due to disc compression

  • Inflammatory muscle disorders (myositis)

  • Neuromuscular junction disorders (e.g., Myasthenia Gravis)

Benefits of EMG
  • Differentiates between nerve vs. muscle diseases

  • Provides detailed insights into muscle health and nerve supply

  • Crucial for unexplained muscle weakness, fatigue, or cramps

3. Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) Test
Assessing Visual Pathway Function from Eye to Brain

A VEP records electrical responses in the visual cortex produced by visual stimuli such as flashing lights or patterned screens. Electrodes placed on the scalp detect how quickly and effectively visual signals travel from the eyes to the brain.

Conditions Diagnosed Using VEP
  • Optic neuritis (commonly associated with Multiple Sclerosis)

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinating diseases

  • Unexplained vision loss

  • Visual pathway injuries due to trauma or stroke

  • Monitoring optic nerve recovery

Why VEP Is Valuable
  • Detects abnormalities even before clinical symptoms appear

  • Non-invasive and safe

  • Helps confirm visual pathway disorders when MRI findings are unclear

Why These Tests Matter

Together, NCS, EMG, and VEP provide a comprehensive view of neurologic function:

  • NCS assesses nerve conduction

  • EMG evaluates muscle activity and neuromuscular junction

  • VEP measures visual pathway integrity

This combination helps neurologists accurately diagnose:

  • Neuropathy

  • Radiculopathy

  • Myopathy and myositis

  • Motor neuron diseases

  • Demyelinating disorders

  • Optic nerve abnormalities

  • Neuromuscular junction diseases

Patient Comfort & Testing Experience
  • All tests are performed by trained neurophysiology experts.

  • NCS and VEP are painless and non-invasive.

  • EMG involves minimal discomfort from a very fine needle.

  • Each test is usually completed within 45–90 minutes.

  • Detailed reports and neurologist interpretation are provided promptly.
